Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a military operation in the Donbas region of Ukraine. Ukraine's Interior Ministry told CNN that Russia's offensive had begun.


Earlier in the day, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a televised address to the Russian people on Thursday morning (February 24th) that Russia had no plans to occupy Ukraine. He called Russia's actions "defensive".


Announcing a "special military operation", Putin said the people of Ukraine would be able to "freely choose" who would run the country.


Meanwhile, the United Nations has called on Russia to refrain from military action in Ukraine. At an emergency meeting of the Security Council, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said there was no alternative to withdrawing Russian troops from Ukraine in order to establish peace. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Russia has offered to negotiate a ceasefire, but no response has been forthcoming.


Tensions have been running high for several days over the deployment of millions of Russian troops on the eastern Ukrainian border. Following the declaration of independence of eastern Ukraine on Monday, the Western nations have been imposing one sanction after another on Russia. In addition to the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Japan, the European Union, an alliance of 28 European countries, has already announced sanctions. Europe has also imposed strict sanctions on Russia's most important gas pipeline, the Nord Stream. The project has been suspended for the time being.
